Hurricane Helene was a large, deadly, catastrophic, and fast-moving tropical cyclone that was the strongest on record to strike the Big Bend region of Florida and devastated parts of the Southeastern United States. Hurricane Milton struck only 2 weeks later in Florida.

Here are some current charities supporting disaster relief in the affected areas, we will update this list periodically (last updated 10/10/2024 3:00 PM Pacific):

💙Direct Relief

Hurricane Helene made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane, bringing life-threatening storm surges, destructive winds, heavy rainfall, and significant flooding. Millions of people are without power, and the outages may extend for weeks.

Direct Relief has already offered assistance to more than 50 safety net healthcare providers in the storm’s path.

Direct Relief will continue assessing the needs of impacted areas and providing resources such as emergency medical supplies, hygiene kits, and transportation support.

Direct Relief is a humanitarian aid organization, active in all 50 states and more than 80 countries, with a mission to improve the health and lives of people affected by poverty or emergencies – without regard to politics, religion, or ability to pay. Direct Relief earns a 100% fundraising efficiency rating from Forbes, tops Charity Navigator's list of the "10 Best Charities Everyone's Heard Of" and is named among "the world's most innovative companies in not-for-profit" by Fast Company.

💙Americares

Americares is on the ground in Florida responding to Hurricane Helene, meeting the health needs in the hardest-hit communities. At the same time, Americares is deploying a second response team to North Carolina to support the relief efforts in the western part of the state near the Tennessee border.

The storm made landfall late Thursday, Sept. 26, in Florida’s Big Bend region as a Category 4 storm with life-threatening flooding, dangerous storm surge and intense winds. The large storm caused extensive damage and power outages from Florida’s Gulf Coast to the North Carolina/Tennessee border, leaving a trail of destruction in its path.

Americares is focused on restoring health services for families affected by the storm. Help us:

  • Deliver medicines and relief supplies to affected communities

  • Provide emergency funding to support the restoration of health services

Americares has already reached out to nearly 350 partner organizations across Alabama, Florida and Georgia located in the path of the storm to offer assistance.

We are committed to staying in the region for as long as it takes to help families recover.

Thank you for standing with us as we respond.

Together, we’ll bring hope and health to the communities affected by this disaster.

💙Project HOPE (Hurricane Helene)

Project HOPE is monitoring the damage Hurricane Helene is leaving in its wake and preparing to deploy an emergency response team as we coordinate with local partners and health facilities closest to the most damaged areas.

Helene made landfall as a catastrophic category 4 hurricane and brought winds of up to 140 miles per hour and catastrophic storm surges, causing life-threatening conditions and disrupting access to emergency and health services.

YOU are an essential part of our work and our ability to respond after disasters like this strike. Donations to this campaign will help deliver lifesaving aid to people impacted by Hurricane Helene while ensuring we can continue to support children and families facing urgent crises around the world during this critical time.

💙Project Hope (Hurricane Milton)

Project HOPE is on the ground in Florida ready to respond to Hurricane Milton. Once the hurricane passes, our team will rapidly move into affected areas to provide urgent relief.

As with most hurricanes, including Hurricane Helene in North Carolina, we expect overwhelming needs for water, sanitation, hygiene supplies, medical care, and mental health support.

You can help rush lifesaving aid to people impacted by Hurricane Milton and ensure we can continue responding to other disasters and health crises worldwide at this critical time

💙Greater Good Charities

Helene is Leaving Destruction Across the Southeast

Hurricane Helene made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 140 mph, and a storm surge of up to 20 feet that sadly killed more than 60 people. The catastrophic storm has made its way up through Georgia, the Carolinas, and beyond, where communities are experiencing massive flooding, tornadoes, wind, and leaving millions of families and businesses without power.

Seven states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia) have declared states of emergency and the need for assistance is building quickly in the impacted communities.

💙Save The Children

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Save the Children is mobilizing in partnership with local organizations in Florida, Tennessee and South Carolina to meet the needs of children and families affected by this historic storm. The Children’s Emergency Fund has been activated to move pre-positioned child-focused supplies to ensure they get into the hands of children and families hardest hit by the storm – including hygiene kits, diapers and baby wipes – as well as classroom cleaning kits to schools and child care centers.

In addition, Save the Children is communicating with local education partners in some of the most impacted areas to understand the extent of the damage and ultimately help restore child care and early learning centers damaged by Hurricane Helene. Our Psychosocial Support team is working with community partners to assess the mental health needs of impacted children and caregivers to begin planning our long-term recovery support.

Save the Children has been supporting children’s most critical needs in emergencies along the Gulf Coast since 2005, including Hurricanes Ian, Irma, Michael, Idalia and Beryl. We are leaders when it comes to responding to the specific needs of children and families after a disaster through coordinating emergency distributions of child-centric supplies, supporting the recovery of child care centers, and provides mental health support programs to help children and their families cope and build resilience.

As the climate crisis intensifies the frequency and severity of extreme weather events and coastal areas become more populated, millions of children in storm-prone areas face increased risks like floods, landslides, damage to homes and schools, heightened exposure to disease, and even death.

💙Humane Society US

🚨 October 2: Our Animal Rescue Team remains on the ground to help animals in communities hit hard following the deadly category 4 Hurricane Helene.

The need in these devastated communities is overwhelming after unprecedented damage.

We are on the ground in Florida and Tennessee offering veterinary care, supply distribution, transportation of adoptable animals out of impacted regions, and field assessment. In just our first day up and running, we were able to distribute much-needed supplies to over 3,400 animals — this wouldn’t be possible without the support of our donors.

💙Red Cross

Over the last two weeks, people in the U.S. have been recovering from unimaginable, large-scale disasters. First, it was Hurricane Helene, and now, many are bracing for Hurricane Milton, which could be one of the most destructive storms on record. The American Red Cross is leading a massive response to ensure no one faces these challenges alone.

Over 2,100 Red Cross disaster responders are working 24/7 with partners to provide safe shelter, meals and emotional support to those affected across multiple states including Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and more. Tens of thousands of people have already taken refuge in shelters, and we’ve distributed meals, water, and relief supplies in some of the hardest-hit areas.

With your support, we can continue to provide lifesaving assistance and help these communities begin to recover. Please start a fundraiser today to support our efforts in the days and weeks ahead and rally your family and friends to join you in making a meaningful difference.

💙World Central Kitchen

World Central Kitchen’s Relief Team is responding to communities affected by Hurricane Helene. Multiple WCK food truck partners and our new Rapid Response Field Kitchen were pre-positioned to provide hot meals quickly after the storm had passed. We're currently responding in North Carolina and Tennessee to serve communities in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

WCK is first to the frontlines, providing meals in response to humanitarian, climate, and community crises. When disaster strikes, WCK’s Chef Relief Team mobilizes to the frontlines with the urgency of now to start cooking and provide meals to people in need. By partnering with organizations on the ground and activating a network of food trucks or emergency kitchens, WCK provides freshly made, nutritious meals to communities impacted by disasters quickly and effectively. We know that good food provides not only nourishment, but also comfort and hope, especially in times of crisis.

WCK has provided more than 400 million fresh, nourishing meals for communities around the world. Your donation today will be used to support our emergency food relief efforts.
