Emergency Moving Support & Assistance with Moving Costs

We have made a friendly guide to emergency moving support and assistance with moving costs.

So, relax; we are here to help you!

Understanding Emergency Moving Assistance

The average cost of hiring movers for a local move can be $2,200, and $4,400 for long-distance moves.

Pretty expensive, right?

If you’re a low-income family, dealing with an emergency move can be mentally and financially challenging.

Don’t worry; that’s where emergency moving assistance can help.

Financial assistance for moving programs assists low income individuals and families who are in crisis situations regarding their relocation.

These services may be offered in terms of monetary assistance toward moving expenses, temporary housing, and long-term support.

Some cases, they may cover 100% of your moving fees (ideal for those who lost their jobs or are from low-income families).

Other services offer grants that can provide you with partial or full financial assistance.

Low-income moving assistance programs come in many forms through various organizations and governmental agencies.

Security Deposit Assistance

Some of the programs provide moving assistance for low-income people:

  • Grants or loans to cover security deposits
  • The first month's rent
  • Actual charges for transportation.

Rental Assistance

Some places offer rental assistance—short-term or long-term— to help get people and families into stable housing situations.

Free Moving Services

Some organizations provide free moving services for low-income families or very inexpensive moving services to needy families, including transportation and labor.

Support Services

Many programs also offer other support, such as housing counseling, job placement assistance, and access to other social services.

Temporary Storage Solutions

Temporary storage assistance can help a great deal to a person who is going through sudden relocation by providing a safe place to store their belongings.

8 Government Programs for Help with Moving Costs

Finding safe, affordable, and accessible housing is one of the main concerns of displaced low-income individuals and families.

Several programs, including those outlined below, relieve some financial burdens and make relocation possible.

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

LIHEAP is a benefit that assists low-income families with their residential energy costs. This covers heating and cooling expenses.

Community Development Block Grants (CDBG)

These funds support urban community development, including affordable housing and job creation, which can help with relocation costs.

CDBG can be used to help relocation costs and housing accessibility modification for low-income persons and families.

Community Services Block Grants (CSBG)

The Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) has funding for the states, territories, and tribes as they administer services through community action agencies to alleviate the causes and conditions of poverty.

This allows local CAAs to offer moving grants for low-income families for moving expenses in several ways. Some of these grants for moving expenses may offset transportation expenses or even security deposits for new housing.

They also provide access to resources so families can obtain affordable housing and any necessary support services in their new communities.

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)

TANF grants states temporary financial assistance in eligible families, including aid for housing-related needs. This program may offer aid for relocation costs and transitioning to new housing for families facing financial hardships.

Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG)

The Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) program combines street outreach, emergency shelters, housing relocation, and short-term rental assistance. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)-funded ESG program to help people and families quickly regain stable housing after experiencing a housing crisis or homelessness.

Housing Choice Voucher Program

Also called Section 8, the Housing Choice Voucher Program offers low-income moving help, such as long-term rental assistance, to eligible needy families.

Eligibility for a housing voucher is based on total annual gross income and family size.

Housing Choice Voucher is only available to US citizens and certain categories of non-citizens who have qualifying immigration status.

The main rule is that the family’s income may not exceed 50% of the median income for the country or metropolitan area in which the family chooses to live.

Modest Needs Grants

Founded in 2002, Modest Needs awards one-time grants of $750 to $1,250 for self-sufficiency. They are paid out to vendors and service providers—and not directly to the families—so you will need a specific place to use the grant, such as a moving truck rental.

Melissa of Los Altos, CA, said, “I am very grateful for the generosity and any sacrifices you [Modest Needs] kindly made for my cause. I cannot tell you how much it means to me to know that there is so much kindness and compassion left in this world!”

Good Neighbor Next Door

Good Neighbor Next Door provides law enforcement officers, teachers (pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade), firefighters, and emergency medical technicians the opportunity to buy homes in revitalization areas at a remarkable discount—50% of the list price.

7 Nonprofit Organizations for Financial Moving Assistance

Here are some nonprofit organizations that can help in times of need:

Catholic Charities USA

Catholic Charities offers a selection of programs to families based on their needs. Among the available—emergency moving assistance— applies to persons who qualify, such as those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

“We build relationships with people,” says Victoria Waldrep, program manager for Catholic Charities’ Homeless and Transitional Housing Services. “I’ve had people call out of their tents and say, ‘Is that you, Victoria?’ Then they come out and throw their arms around me.”

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army housing assistance includes shelters, transitional housing, and permanent supportive housing. In cities where the organization doesn’t have any shelters, it covers the cost of partner shelters.

Salvation Army’s transitional housing programs include food, lodging in temporary shelters, and other resources and support needed to regain stability.

Erica Hitt, Social Services Director for The Salvation Army in Lubbock, said, “We were able to secure affordable subsidized housing that was income-based [for Joseph Davis, a single father with three kids], making the likelihood of long-term success much greater.”

She continued, “This precious family has touched our hearts in so many ways. Watching them love and lift one another up, even during crisis and uncertainty, has been encouraging and uplifting to us all.”

YWCA

This women- and minority-focused organization offers a variety of housing-related assistance programs, including transitional services that can offer help with moving expenses.

The YWCA has served 31,890 people in housing-related services; 59.46% of people served were people of color, and 70.90% of people served were women and girls.

211

211 is a free national hotline that connects callers seeking assistance with community services that can help. Call the hotline if you’re seeking moving and housing-related expense assistance; you will learn exactly what type of support may be available to you and what next steps you will need to take.

Community Action Agencies

Local organizations offer various forms of assistance, including help with moving costs and housing support for low-income families and individuals.

Local religious organizations

Many churches, synagogues, and mosques offer volunteer help and financial aid for moving.

Veterans Affairs (VA) Housing Assistance

VA Housing Assistance offers financial assistance to veterans who require low-income moving assistance. In addition to the low-interest homes and refinance loans, it provides for transitional housing expenses.
